Should I buy a exterior prehung door and use a jamb extension kit??

Hi I am looking into replacing my old exterior door with a new prehung fiberglass door. my old door has a 6 9/16 door jamb size. The new door is only a 4 9/16 jamb. I am seeing the cost of doors with a 6 9/16 jamb are about double what I can get a 4 9/16 jamb door for. Would you recommend a door jamb extension kit to bring it to size? I really never mess to much with installing prehung doors so i wanted some advice. Thanks in advance.

I would order the correct door for the wall thickness. It will come with a wider sill and the extensions will be nice factory installed ones.

XSleeper I was thinking the same thing. It would be a nice factory install but I was finding it hard for example the big box store has the small jamb for $533 and the correct jamb around $1200 I have a duplex and would need 2 so the price for both doors would equal the price for one. I guess it will be a decision I will have to make.

You might try pricing them at your local lumber yard instead of the big box. Or try the competition.
