How to release spring in a window balance?
Just bought a set of window balances to repair my old one, because new custom one is out of stock (at swisco) with no ETA. And since I cannot get custom ones elsewhere, I had to buy something similar to my old ones and swap some of the parts (the shoes and the hook).
The hook that comes with the new balance is too big. I need to replace it with the hook from my old balance. To do that I need to release the spring. Is there a special tool or technique to release (and mount) the spring? I managed to do it but I had to screw the balance to a work bench while I pull on the spring with a wire loop. Is there an easier way or a special tool?

There are dozens of balances so we have no way of knowing what you have without a photo or a product link.
If it's the kind with a string and the hook has a knot you just need to pull some string out and put a vise grips on the string about 6" from the knot and release the string and let the vise grips hold it, leaving you about 6" of slack to work with.
Either that or drill the hole bigger to receive the larger hook.
