Door hanging issue

Hello,

I hung a bedroom door and encountered a weird problem. The bottom of the door is fine and sits flush against the door stop. But at the top of the door there is a significant gap between the door and the door stop. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You say that you hung the door. Did you mortise the hinges? If so it might be hinge placement. Which part is out of plumb, the door or the frame?

I would remove the upper hinge to see if the door fits flush against the stops. I would also check that the door is straight.

That typically means the wall on one side is not as plumb as the wall on the other side. In other words they are not in the same plane. (It can sometimes also mean the door is warped).

To solve that you would need to cut loose and tweak the jamb, best done before casing is on. From the picture side, top left would move in (toward the door) a 1/16, top right would move out 1/16", bottom right would move in 1/16", bottom left would move out 1/16". Those 4 adjustments would move the top corner of the door slab 1/4" toward the door stop.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. since the last post I have noticed several doors in the house that have various issues, such as gaps, trouble closing, tight spots, etc. I think I will need someone to come by and repair them. Who do I call for such a job? Are there door hanging specialists? I live in Bergen county NJ in case you can recommend someone. Thank you.
