No wood behind striker plate - almost

I need to install a striker plate for the latch bolt on the front door. But there is no wood where the screw holes are supposed to be. Someone removed too much wood about the size of the striker plate. Is there a way to fill the void and drill new screw holes? Thank you.

A common way is to cut out a section of the frame and fit in a new piece of wood. You can also use a larger strike plate whose mounting holes are in a different location.

Thank you for the tip. Please confirm that cutting out means disconnecting the top section from the bottom with a saw. Not just drilling out.

You can also drill into the stud with a forstner bit or a spade bit and glue in a short piece of large dowel.

Drilling and dowel-ing seems to be less daunting than cutting out the bad section. Thank you.
