Storm Door Installation Question

I was planning to install a storm door in front of our front door. However, before purchasing the door I took measurements and am now already feeling a little stuck. When I measure the framing inside the house I get 36 inches dead on. When I go outside and measure outside (where I would obviously be installing the storm door) I get dead on 35 inches. I was looking to install a 36x80 door but now I am thinking that isn't possible. Will I HAVE to go custom? Attached is a picture of our current front door.

No. It's 35 because of the way they wrapped your trim with aluminum. If you want to install a storm door you will need to remove that aluminum cladding. Once you do, it will be 36" between your brickmold.

If you wanted you, you could carefully take a sharp utility knife and score the aluminum (cutting it back 1/2" on each side... And score the jamb so it's 2 1/2"... Assuming 4 9/16" total wall thickness) and maybe save it, but im not sure it's worth the effort to save it. It would be a lot easier to just rip it off and have someone wrap it correctly.

Makes sense. I was wondering if the aluminum wrap was the suspect here. I can't say I am too surprised!

Yeah. Its a real disservice to wrap a door that way. I see it quite often and try to never do it that way myself. People may not have a storm door now, but they might want to later.
