I have this on all of my windows. Home is almost 30 years old, no idea what was used before. How can I fix it? I keep getting sand through all my windows(desert).
If it could be tediously explained on how to fix I'd be forever grateful! Layman's terms would be very helpful! I have no idea what to use, if sand is getting in I would assume that not only the inside needs to to sealed but so does the outside!
Product recommendations highly sought after so I don't end up using the wrong item!
MH windows aren't much more than storm windows Unless it's coming in thru the screen I'm not sure there is much you can do other than make sure there is good caulking where it attaches to the siding. Ideally you'd replace those windows with new double glazed windows.
I suspect it's just a poor fit between the sash and frame or the brush seals need to be replaced. Close the window and look closely around the edges where the sash meets the frame. Push and pull on the sash and see if it moves. You are looking for any gaps that will need to be sealed.
Horizontal slider windows collect dirt. That is their nature. You just need to clean them once in a while... More so if its windy. If you have never washed the frames, that would explain why they are so dirty.
I'm not concerned about the dit in the window . I'm concerned about the dirt in the house. Yes the window is open. But it does not need to be open to get the dirt in the house. I have windows that have NEVER been opened and they have dirt on the window sill. I know there will be dirt between the screen and window pane. I'm not concerned with that. It's was 80 degrees today so I opened a window. Thats when all the stuff fell out and the cracks got bigger. The window unit moves on the bottom.
My concern is every window I have has these cracks where the window unit meets the house, all 31 windows. Through these cracks sand/dirt come through. I'm worried about water getting in-between the outside wall and inside wall and rotting wood and creating mold.
How can I fix it.
We have only owned the house for 3 months.
Thank you.
It's hard to find information on this. Everything that comes up Is for installing new windows, these windows are nice double pane windows they don't need replacing themselves but something had to be done about the cracks that let dirt and stuff in.
I'm sorry I didn't explain clearly in the beginning! I have no idea about a lot of this stuff! Hope my last explanation is more helpful! House was vacant for 8 years before we moved in. I cleaned all the window sills when we moved in, this is the first day I opened a window. I had seen all the cracks when I cleaned the house when we moved in. Ts extremely windy where we are, and I worry more damage will be done as we get into the really windy season here.
Thank you!!

Clean off any old caulking that is loose by pushing through it with a stiff putty knife... then caulk the cracks. Use any paintable latex caulking. (Not silicone).
We recently bought a few interior transoms and noticed the glass is slightly loose. Not like it is going to fall out or anything, it just shifts a little bit when you open and close them.
Any recommendations for how I can shore up the glass?

This door jam was put in around 1954. the jam is 1.25 thick
So after removingThat leaves me with inch and 3/4 opening to shim. Thats a lot of shimming.
A 2x4 would be tight. Could rip off about 3/4 of an inch. Not sure what is best. Special order a door? is it worth the extra cost?
How should this be handled?
