replacing very old door leaves 1.75 to shim?
This door jam was put in around 1954. the jam is 1.25 thick
So after removingThat leaves me with inch and 3/4 opening to shim. Thats a lot of shimming.
A 2x4 would be tight. Could rip off about 3/4 of an inch. Not sure what is best. Special order a door? is it worth the extra cost?
How should this be handled?

I don't really have any idea what your question is so maybe you could rephrase it. Are you removing the old door and jamb and putting a new prehung door in? What is your new door size and what is your rough opening size?
If you are saying that the difference between your new door width and your rough opening is 1.75"... then you would likely want to add 1/2" or 5/8" plywood onto each side of the rough opening. Run a bead of caulk or construction adhesive behind it so that it isn't drafty, and nail it to the rough opening. Then install your door. You will have less space to shim. 3/8" or so per side is ideal.

yes, i will be putting in a new pre-hung. and was surprised about the measurements until noticing the old jam is so thick, thus leaving a large opening. with newer doors the jam is much thinner and I wasn't sure.
Appreciate the answer.

osb work as well as plywood?
So, XSLEEPER especially, would OSB work for building up the rough opening for the door.?
