tips for installing prehung doors

While I've installed a few prehungs I've never installed the split jamb type before. I have 2 to install tomorrow. Can you nail thru the stop once you have it plumb/shimmed or will that prevent the other half from sliding in?

You can nail through the stop AFTER you have the two halves slid together but not before. I hang the side that has the door. Get it positioned, shimmed and mounted where I want it then slide in the other side's trim.

maybe put a few nails thru the casing to hold it in place before you slide the other half in ?
how do you keep the shims in place? force fit or liquid nail?
