Non standard door

I am at far end of a remodel project and just found that the door is 26 x 78 ... not getting it anywhere

While I can probably order and get it, it will delay my project severely

Did anyone ever try trimming a door by 2" ( 28" wide are available) and then gluing a strip of wood on the hollow side ?

Is that something that can work ?

That's a pretty narrow door - no chance of changing the opening?

When we had to replace a similarly narrow old door, we eventually had to look to mobile home catalogs to find a skinny-enough door.

House doors are typically 80" tall why mobile home doors are usually 78" tall. Hal's advice to check with a mobile home supply house is a good one.

I have cut hollow core doors short and glued a piece of wood in the bottom to give back the support but never tried doing that on the side.

Changing the opening is too much work and beyond my ability and budget
For now, I an repairing, painting and putting the old door, but I do see box stores sell 26 x 80 doors . Just that there is some waiting

Like the idea to cut the bottom and glue a strip at the bottom

Thanks

Interestingly, when I googled, it looks like the big box stores sell this exact size ( 26 x 78) in Canada.

Worst case -- 6 hour drive to Montreal and buy it 😜

Yes it's possible. Just as Marksr I also have cut the length. The problem with the width is cutting it very straight and accurately. Then you want to put a very slight bevel on the edges (perhaps using a fine file). Using a table saw with full support for the length of the door in both directions with someone helping you guide it through the blade.
Then you clean off the cut piece. Remove the top and bottom skin and insert the wood strip into the cut edge. Use the same piece because it's thickness is a perfect. Trying to duplicate the thickness could be a problem. Hollow doors are comparatively cheap and I would try it. If you screw it up then order the right size and a solid door.

Thank you all

I finally got a 26 x 78 at a lumber store. It is about twice the price of what I would pay for a 28x 78 at big box store, but worth .
