Question

Doe anyone have an opinion on the Milgard windows? I am replacing steel frame windows with the vinyl retrofit. Quote prom the window contractor on Milgard was the lowest and he said that it’s got a better warranty….
Thanks

Milgard is a good window, and Milgard will stand behind their warranty. The contractor said they have a better warranty than what other brand? Not that I doubt the contractor, but read both warranties yourself and make a comparison. Look specifically at the number of years the frames and the seal of the glass are covered, and what problems with the frames are covered (blistering, discoloration, warpage, breakage, etc.)

screens

Thanks Lefty,

I did look at the warranty and it does sound strong but there are still loopholes where manufacturer will be able to say that the window was not properly used or ???? + I just realized that the window shown to me did not have a screen, going to ask salesperson why, but was wondering if it’s normal in the industry. Sierra windows, that I’ve got an estimate before did have the screen on it.

I don't install or service Milgard windows (I install Amerimax), but a good friend of mine does, and has for years. IF there were ever a problem with one of your Milgard windows (assuming that you go with them) and it needed repair or replacement, I'm sure Milgard would take care of it, no problem. If it were any other way, I'm sure my friend would have dropped the line a long time ago. Milgard, like most of the major window mfgrs., has no problem with doing whatever it takes to keep a customer happy. It is cheaper for them to replace a window than it is to put up with dissatisfied customers. As for the no screen, I would guess that it had been removed from the demo window for display purposes.

I'm in the midst of a remodel and we just replaced most of the windows with Milgard Vinyl windows. I like them. They have a thicker frame which caught me offguard, but they seem sturdy. All windows have screens, I'm told, although I haven't seen them for the garden window yet. The screens for the large windows are a bit warped, but I'm told that they will straighten out in time while attached to the window frames. They are a bit annoying to put on because there is a little button that needs to be pushed in to get them inside of the frame, but they won't be falling out.

I bought casements, double pane, low E. I don't know if I can get the butterfly crank handles. The handles I have stick out quite a bit and will force me to have to do something special with window coverings if I cannot replace them.

One other thing: I noticed that the garden window only has one setting for opening the side windows. Why did they make them that way? I'm told that if I want to open them more, I need to insert a stick to hold them up. Is there a nicer way to accomplish this without violating the warranty?
