can you replace just the outside window of a double hung
my mom is having new siding put on her house and part of the deal is replacing a few windows. one of the double hung windows arrived today and the contractor admitted they damaged it in transport and the outside top window is cracked. the inside one is fine. they said they are gonna measure the glass and replace it without taking the window out
i thought there was gas in between panes or is that not the case in all windows? also is it ok for just a general contractor to replace a window pane like this or should the window people come out and do it

Windows today contain a IGU a sealed double pane insert, they are not intended to be repaired!
Replacement is simple, take apart the sash, remove the IGU, install new IGU, good to go!

ok i'm confused. you said not intended to be repaired but then you said replacement is simple,
so is it something the general contractor can do or should the window people come out

ok good to know. he said they are just cutting a new piece of glass and that sounded incomplete to me

Well, whether he knows what he's doing or not or is blowing smoke out his @ is pretty hard for us to say. IGU's get ordered to fit and are a sealed unit. You don't just replace a single piece of glass that you picked up at the hardware store.
It's only "simple" if you know what you are doing and have the proper tools and glazing materials to do it.
