How to fix a window grill?

My exterior doors have what looks like plastic window grills on them that the previous owners took the middle crossing bars out leaving the frame with gaps. I would like to somehow fill it with the intention of painting the whole frame afterwards any suggestions?

A paintable caulk would work.

Filling the gaps and painting or re-installing the cross bars and painting?

You could replace the trim. It would be four pieces of molding... without the holes for the grill pieces.

You can fill the holes with putty. You can also use painters caulk though for a big hole like that I would let it dry for a couple weeks before painting.

While caulking will adhere well in a hole, it will shrink and never look as neat as painter's putty will.
