Window in exterior steel door leaking
Usually the wind and rain comes from the SW but today there was a rain storm with winds coming out of the E or NE. On the east side of the house rain came through the bottom of the window frame, running down the door from there to the floor. After the rain I inspected and it appears the sealant or adhesive they used is getting brittle. There are some places where I can fit my fingernail between the glass frame and the door. So, my question is, would a bead of Silicone around the outside of the frame be sufficient or do I need to take it apart and do more?

Silicone is the best sealant to use against the glass. But silicone repels paint so you don't really want to use it anywhere you might ever need to paint. You can use it on the outside perimeter of the glass frame if you don't mind painting up to / around the silicone. So if the door is white, use white silicone, and be neat about it. No need to take the frame apart.
If you ever do need to paint the silicone, you will need to use white pigmented shellac to prime it. (Zinsser BIN)

Thank you XSleeper. Are you referring to the outside? The paint is chalking so maybe I should paint the door then apply silicone. But Zinsser BIN is meant for interior so that's why I'm asking. It's supposed to be under a lifetime warranty but had to get the Attorney General involved to get another problem taken care of.
