Replacement Z-Bar

The bushings on an old security/storm door on my mother's house failed and the z-bar is damaged. I cannot find the manufacturer's information, but the glass is Chamberlain security class out of Arkansas. Hopefully someone will recognize the door and parts are still available. I do not want to have to replace it.

Last time I priced a replacement z-bar it was $90 plus shipping. Made me think twice about "repair".

But Larsen hinge side Z bars should probably work. Your photos don't show the hinge with the door open (from the side with the screws that fasten it to the door) so it's hard to say for sure.

Z-Bar replacement

Thanks, here's a picture of the hinge side of the z-bar.

It's a 1940 house build by my stepfather so nothing, including the doors are standard. It will be well worth $90 or a bit more not to have to try and fit a new door not to mention the all the locks here are keyed the same, etc....

Looks pretty similar, I think a Larson hinge side z-bar would work. You will probably need to paint it to match. Double check that your door thickness is similar. Just looked one up online that was $105. This inflation is nuts.

Thanks for the help XSleeper, but Larson made it clear that they didn't want to sell me a part for an off-brand door. I'll just cleanup and repaint the trim and go without the storm door.

I remove the old Z bar and install more traditional hinges. They can be drilled and screwed or through bolted to the door and screwed into the jamb/casing/frame of the house. I start with the door lying flat on a table. I mount my top and bottom hinges to the door lightly with one screw. Then I lay a straight edge along the two hinges to get them aligned properly and I install the rest of the screws and put a third hinge in the middle. Always be mindful to keep all your hinges exactly in line so the door doesn't bind.

I thought about using the replacement storm door hinges you can buy at the box stores and fitting them into the old z-bar by cutting some of the damaged pin tube off, but was worried the additional thickness would cause binding issues.

You don't need to go through Larson. Other repair websites have it.

XSleeper,
Received the Larson Z-bar and installed it this afternoon. It works as well as the old one did prior to the pin shims failing. Thanks for the advice, it worked.
