How do you properly fasten a exterior prehung door to a brick opening

I have a older brick house. I brought 2 fiberglass entry doors. I removed the first old door and the opening had 1 inch thick and 3.5 wide wood attached to the brick. I screwed the new door into the wood and the install was a success. When I remover the 2nd door the wood attached to the brick was rotted. I installed a new piece of wood screwed into the brick but it is not setting flush against the brick. which is causing the new door not to seat properly. Should I remove the wood pieces and grind the brick to make it flush and then put back the wood and install the door or would it be best to remove the wood completely and try screwing the new door directly into the brick? Thanks in advance.

could you use a thinner piece of wood and then shim it to fit? or notch the wood?

No a thinner piece of wood won't work. there is more brick sticking out towards the middle and bottom which make the top section of the wood stick out. instead of using the wood as a whole piece maybe I could cut it in sections to make it work..I might try chisling the brick to try and get it close to level.
