Caulking around old windows

Hello!

I have a 1930s home with original windows and need to re-caulk around the exterior as its getting worn out. I assume I need to remove all the old caulk? I have a couple pictures below, but there is brick next to the window.

Are there any tips to remove this old caulk and clean to apply new caulk? The old is hard and will be hard to remove. I assume I have to remove before going over, correct?

Thank you!

One of my favorites is a painter's tool, then there is a old screwdriver and putty knife. There aren't too many secrets to removing old caulk other than sweating and digging the old out. You'll just have to see once you get started. Yours is cracked and separated from the brick so it looks like the wood side will be the difficult part. Sometimes a wood chisel can be slid down the border between the wood and caulk to cut or pop the old caulk off.

I have good luck removing old caulk by using an oscillating tool with a worn blade. The tool does most of the work as you move up, and you don't worry about hitting brick because the blade is already smooth.
You may want to use oil-based caulk when you re-seal. Oil based caulk will stand up best to heat and flex.

I assume PD is referring to a 5in1 putty knife

While it's best to remove all the old caulk I wouldn't fret if you can't get it all. It won't be an easy/quick job.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Was able to get this project done before winter. A combination of a screwdriver, wood chisel, and putty knife worked best for me.
