i am looking into replacing my 50 year old encasements with double hung windows. would appreciate any suggestions regarding the removal of the old window and the replacement of the new one. any good web sites on this matter would also be appreciated.

Are you planning on replacing the windows, or retrofitting them?
"Replacing" is removing the entire existing window to the rough opening and installing the new windows in that opening.
"Retrofitting" is removing all of the parts of the existing window and leaving the frame in place. The new window is sized to fit that opening.
The installation and finishing methods are totally different.
