New Interior French Doors

I have some door openings - all finished with drywall - that I'd like to install french doors into. The openings, framed as doorways, but finished with drywall on the jambs (no doors/frames/jambs were ever put in).

Do I need to remove the drywall where the door frames will go or can I fasten the frame/jamb (is there a difference) straight through the drywall into the studs?

If not - what would the best way to remove the drywall?

Typically to do the job right you should remove the drywall on the jambs only and set the door in then trim the edges and top of the door with door casing(trim). To remove the drywall just use a razor knife and score it many times in the corner neatly. It doesn't have to be perfect because you are going to cover it up with trim.

Aluminum Window Replacement

I have an older house built in the 60's with aluminum single pain single hung windows and aluminum siding. These were the goods ones with the marble sill!! I could use some sugestions on replacing these windows. The aluminum siding comes right up to the aluminum frame of the window. On the inside there is a cheap looking piece of wood with some weather stripping behind it to seal the window. The dry wall goes up to the frame of the window. 1) Should I be looking at removing the old marble base and the partial drywall around the inside of existing frame and installing new construction windows between the existing studs? I would like double hung with wood on the inside. Looking at Pella perhaps. 2) Do they make new construction windows without a nailing flange around the outside? I really don't want to do a lot of exterior cutting of the siding and would rather not have to put a molding around the outside of the new windows since the old ones didn't have one either. 3) Any tips for finishing of the ouside? Will drip edge be required or is this typically part of the windows?? 4) If I have to use a nailing flange is there a easy way without cutting the siding!! Maybe adding wood around existing inside frame and going with a smaller window opening?? What are your comments on this? Thanks for your comments!Read More

Sliding glass doors
