Question

Outside Sliding glass doors about 30 yrs old - the brown aluminum ones. In order to replace the rollers - which really need it - the stationary door needs to be removed, but I can't figure out how! Nothing visible holding it that I can see! thanks! aSoaringHawk@att.net

Cool

Why do you need to remove the fixed part?
You should be able to lift the slider up and out.

The base channel that holds the door has a ridge on one side that is high so the door can only be lifted out one way - outward. The stationary part blocks part of the opening, sooo it has to come out first!

Cool

Got it.
It may be that the only way to remove the slider is to dismantle the door frame. It should be screwed in.
Without being able to see what you're dealing with, it is very hard to say.
Sorry that I can't help. Maybe someone else can.
Good Luck!

30 year old Stationary panels have lock plates most of the time or are just jammed

Look to the inside of the stationary panel on the jam and check for a few plates which will be fastened to the frame that are securing the panel to the jam. Also check at the top and bottom of the outside edge of the stationary panel for a bracket at the top and bottom.

After all fasteners are removed, slip a small pry bar under the panel and get it to move a bit. Slip the pry bar into the side jam and work the panel out a few inches so both sides of the frame are clear of the jam. Lift the panel and remove. HD now has a selection of wheels for the older style however their are over 60 different wheels which were used so you may need to go to a glass company who can special order them through a distributor .....(The glass company will recognize either CR Laurence, Somaca or Colonial as distributors who carry the wheels.....

PS in rare occasions the header settles and locks in the door and it will have to be taken apart in place. Remove the sides and you can flex the glass a bit to remove it if the glass is tempered.

Thanks to both of you for your information. After the job is done (hopefully today) I'll post the results. Thanks again!

Job done! Fixed panel held in by weather-stripping. At the jam on the bottom was a 1/2" opening with no weather-stripping. I inserted a big (2') flat blade screwdriver
& pried it out! Thanks to all that responded! Hawk
