Unhappy Repair/Replace patio door glass?

Last weekend a stray pebble flew out of my lawnmower and into our 1-year old Atruim center-hinged patio door. AAAARG!

Only the outside pane of glass on the hinged door broke, leaving me with the inner side intact (for now). So, I'm trying to get my arms around repair/replacement options and calmly choose the best one.

Would it be less expensive to take the door off of its hinges and into a glass shop for repair? Is that an option at all? Or do I have to order a replacement door from Atrium (their special order book indicates a cost of 40% of the entire pre-hung door, just for the one side)?

I've done lots of major remodeling projects at home, and I wouldn't be afraid to try replacing the glass panel myself, but I don't know a thing about replacing glass - any and all comments are welcome!

Thanks.

It's been a while since I put in an Atrium brand door, so I don't remember the way they hold their glass in, but I'm going to assume there is a strip around the glass on the inside that holds the glass unit in place. Carefully remove the strips and you should be able to get the glass out.

Since the door is new and you probably still have the model # and all, you should be able to order replacement glass via Atrium at the place you bought the door, or at least get them to give you the size and thickness of the unit so you can get one from a local glass shop.

With the keeper strips out, replacing the glass is just a matter of removing the old and setting the new one in place, then reinstall the strips.
