opinion for window coverings, please
my bedroom has three big windows that i put beautiful, light-filtering, sky blue, honeycomb blinds in. sometimes i need more light blocking though. any ideas on what i can add to my honeycombs? my taste tends to non-frou-frou, contemporary. i don't want something real heavy or dark or formal looking. any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I don't think you have too many options, then. Where are they mounted? Inside or outside? If there's room under, then just hang some blackout roller shades, which can be rolled all the way up when you want light.
Otherwise, I can't think of anything other than blackout lined curtains over them. There are contemporary styles available, such as grommets or ripplefold (custom only), but nothing that will give complete darkness.

The honeycombs are inside mounted. I know I can't get complete darkness ... I'm just looking to see how dark I can get it without ending up looking like Elvira or something.

Another treatment you could go with are blackout Roman shades, as long as you can mount them flush with the window, as you don't want them to stick out in the room, away from the window. That would leave a gap at the sides plus it won't look nice.
Other than the Romans or Panels, I can't think of anything else.

you can use energy efficient black-out window panels that you can find on the market nowadays. they are single layered, but the fabric has been treated on the reverse side to be completely light-blocking.
i've seen them at home depot/lowes, ikea as well as in bedbathbeyond and on macy's website. they come in a whole range of different colors, so your options for something light/neutral should be no problem. the fabric feels soft and drapes nicely. the window panels usually come in a very simple and sleek style, usually with rod pocket and back tabs or i've seen them with just tabs. they should go nicely with your current shades as they are pretty modern and sleek in style.. and block out the light when you need it!
