Appropriate cornice projection

Hi all again,

I was wondering what forum members think about the appropriate projection/depth of the cornice for this project. I understand 7" is about standard, but the window, as you see, as set in a sort of alcove. The alcove is 12" deep.

Should the cornice projection be a bit more than 7"? The drape will be velvet, lined and interlined.

Many thanks.

It should project at least 2" more than the draperies. Is the Roman an inside mount? Do you know the projection of the rod? If the rod is a standard projection of 3 1/2", then I'd use a 1x6 for the cornice. I wouldn't make it too deep or you'll be able to see everything under it.
I've never heard of 7" being standard for a cornice. It really all depends.

Interesting, Shadeladie. Many thanks for guidance. Roman is an inside mount, and I'm pretty sure the rod is 3-1/2". 1x6" sounds good.

Thinking about this, it probably wouldn't hurt to make a mock up first. If you don't have a 1x6 laying around, maybe some poster board or cardboard cut to 5 1/2" (the actual size), then tape another piece in front to form a box. Put it over your existing curtains to make sure there's enough clearance.
If you do have to go larger, a 1x8 may have to be ripped down a bit so it doesn't project too far or the cornice may have to be an inch longer so you can't see under it.
Because of the size of the window and the work involved in making a cornice, it would be worth the extra time to make a mock up to be sure.

Just to add (lol) I still think a 1x6 will be enough, especially since the curtains will be stationary.
What kind of heading will you have on the draperies?

Hi Shadeladie,

Was thinking of pinch pleats. BUT - I do plan to have a traverse rod so that I can have the option of moving the panels. (It's a sunny, drafty window.) ???

So grateful for your thoughts!

Pinch pleats are best. Altho enough clearance is more important when traversing, I think the 1x6 should be fine.

Many thanks, Shadeladie. Think 1x6" good, especially in light of thread I just posted about cornice lining matching drape lining.
