Cold air return and electrical wiring

I am re-doing an older home which was still using an oil burning furnace. I gutted the house and then had the heating and cooling guys come in and install a new system and put in all the duct work. Now I am redoing the electrical and need to pull nm cable through where the return air will run. There is no duct work, it will only be an opening between the studs in the wall covered on both sides by drywall.

Can I run the wire through this space?

Thanks for the feedback. It made sense to me but I figured I'd run it past the folks here before diving in to the code.
