Checking ducts and filter for wood dust

I did a lot of sanding furniture in my small apartment. I asked the maintenance man to clean out the air ducts but he checked them and said they were fine. But I am sure a lot of wood dust got up in the ducts and could be a reason why I am having health problems. Is there a way I can check them myself? or clean them?
I know it was stupid of me to sand in the home. I learned the hard way.

You could hang a damp cloth over each register and see what you get. If anything. Put a new pleated filter in the unit every 30 days .See if you can find some "filter coat" that you spray on the intake side of the filter. this will also help with the dust. You can also take and wash down the AC coil there in the unit.
