Ventilation for rooms without attic

The master bedroom of my house has cathedral ceiling and is located directly under the roof without the attic in between. It is extremely hot in the summer even with air conditioning on. I've read all these articles about proper ventilation can help keep the house cool in summer. I'm wondering if a structure like this need ventilation just like an attic does and if that would help reduce the heat in the room. If so, how is it achieved with such a narrow space between the roof and the ceiling? Would the combination of the soffit and ridge vents work in this case? Thanks!

Yes if if if . You have a space above the insulation that the air can get through. Check it out and see just what you have there in the roof and how it is.
