Is this enough cold air return?

My new home has only cold air return in the basement of the house. I want to extend one of the returns and route into a large living room on the main floor. The furnace is a combination wood/oil. Is there a formula or ratio for determining the volume of air to return versus the volume put out? I realize we need more return then just the basement as I don't want my furnace to starve, but I need to know how much ratio is for the cold air returns.
Thanks

Not knowing your size for furnace and if it is doing cooling also I cannot say.
A rule of thumb is a minimum 6" square inches per thousand Btu's.
