leaking AC ducts

I have older heating and duct work throughout my house. I have found leaks at seams and sealed them with tape, but I also have some leaks where the ducts come out of the blower unit. Is it OK to use caulk (indoor/outdoor silicone or another type) to fix these leaks? Also is it recommended to insulate the ducts in the basement as it is warmer/cooler in my furnace room than is necessary. If so what type of insultion is recommended?

Thanks in advance

What type of tape did you use?

-Duct tape will dry out over time, and looks bad, and leaks again.
-Foil tape is good, they don't dry out. but some times it may not seal.

I'd suggest duct sealer.. It's like culking, but it's made for duct work.. You can find them in the duct asile at Home Depot or other stores.

Thanks for the info about the caulking. I did learn that duct tape dries out. I will switch to the foil tape.
