Help, Poor air flow.

I recently moved into a house that is 2350 square feet, four bedrooms, two story. The two farthest bedrooms have poor air flow with AC or Heat. The cold air returns move very very little air. One room closer to the source, the cold air return works well. The furnace and air conditioner were replaced in 2002. I'm not sure why they put the AC/furnace at the oposite end of the house instead of a more central location. They installed a booster fan in the supply duct that goes upstairs to the two farthest bedrooms. It helps push; however, it is noisy and doesn't help pull the air back to the unit.

Can you install boosters in the return ducts as well?

Could the unit be sized incorrectly?

Could there be no return duct connected to the returns in the room? The return "duct" in the wall is just the cavity created by the 2x4 studs. I assume that there is a duct at the bottom of the wall. I thought about placing another return opening at the bottom of the wall in the same cavity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Booster fans don't do much.. And there is no such thing as return ones..

The duct maybe sized wrong...

Did you try to close off the dampers in the duct feeding the main floor?
