Question cold air return noisy

My cold air return is in the living room (open floor plan) and very noisy. any suggestions on how to cut down on the noise, can I put a piece of furniture in front of it with 3-4 inch clearance to allow air flow but filter the noise?

what is it made out of? is it right next to the blower?

blower noise? replace with 1" lined duct.

air noise? replace with the proper sized duct.

To determine size - what do I use. It is a 75,000 BTU. It is on the wall of the living room at the bottom and is approx. 21inx21in. It is located directly in the wall next to the furnace and I have to unscrew the face plate to change the filter. There's no room between the furnace, wall and vent. It is extremely noisy and I'm not sure if it's blower noise or vent noise. Thanks for your help. SS
