air filter options - which is best

I just replaced a 4 ton unit with a Ducane. I currently have the 1" in-line filter. The installers recommended upgrading the air filter and gave a few choices.

Media Filter
Electrostatic
Electronic.

The house is two stories, 2300 sq feet, central air / heat

The house has two cats. We don't have real allergies but at times we do get congested and stuffy, What system would be best for the home and why.

I would perfer something that can easily install within the ductwork with out a lot of cutting and sheet metal work if possible. The supply side of the duct where the above would have to get intalled is 14" high * 26 deep * 16 wide.

Meida filter would be the best thing to have.

The other two, don't even waste your time looking into them..

The media filters needs to be change out once or twice a year, and only takes 4 sec to change out the filters w/ a new one.

Hi--We are having a very warm, humid summer and I just noticed that a portion of my supply ductwork is sweating like crazy. It is just about 1/6 of the main supply trunk that is affected and the attached runs just near this portion of the supply---the rest of the system and runs are dry. They are located in the basement which we just finished this winter (put in a 8' drop ceiling with a small dropped area being only 7' to accomodate the main heat/ac supply and return trunks). At the time of remodeling we also added 2 high-low returns to the basement; we also added significant insulation to the floor joists above, but did not insulate the ducts themselves. Our furnace is located in the center of the room with one return directed to each side of the room. Our system is only 3 years old and we did not have this problem before we put the ceiling in, but we never had this long of a stretch of het and humidity, either. The problem area is located adjacent to a wall common to our attached garage (garage is at ground level, so wall in question runs from garage(aboveground) down underground to basement)Our basement is 65 degrees with 65% humidity while the garage is 84 degrees with 55% humidity. (I am also wondering now why my basement that is closed and insulated is so much more humid than my unairconditioned non energy efficient garage!!) Our HVAC man was stumped why it was just a small portion, but suggested adding even more insulation around the affected area to help insulate and absorb the moisture; while the contractor suggested putting down the rubber roofing sheeting on top of the ceiling tile so the tile don't get ruined by the dripping water. I don't favor either because they don't really address the problem, and I am afraid will encourage mold/mildew. If you have any suggestions I would be most appreciative.Read More

Sizing Basement Return Air Grille

Greetings ... All the contributors to DoItYourself.com forums have made finishing my basement an enjoyable experience. Appreciate all of the advice and down right specific answers to questions. Here's my question. What must I take into consideration in order to determine how large of a hole (and subsequent grille) to cut in my drywall for the return air vent in my basement? I've got two 6" supply ducts (with in-line dampers) feeding registers located in the ceiling about 12" away from the exterior wall. I'm going to use the space between two studs (16" centers) as the return from the basement on the opposite wall. I've covered the back of 'this space' with sheet metal and have a 8" duct coming out of the top of it. That duct connects to an existing return air duct/trunk line going back to the Furnace/AC unit. On the other side of 'this space' I now have drywall. I plan on putting the return air grille down towards the floor. Question is ... how big of a grille do I need (consequently, how big of a hole should I cut in the drywall)? Or does the size of this hole not really matter much considering I've already made the decision to supply the room with two 6" lines and return with one 8" line? Thanks in advance.Read More
