Rerouting Heat Ducts

I have a finished basement with a rather low drop ceiling. I would like to sheetrock the ceiling, but the heat ducts go right down the middle of the room. My question is: is there anyway I can reroute the ducts to go around the side of the room rather than straight down the middle without losing any efficiency? I have heard that every 90 degree turn in your ductwork reduces the efficiency. Also, is there anyway I could perhaps use thinner but wider ducts to reduce the height loss from the ceiling or perhaps use round ducts to save space? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Nope, I am afraid you are stuck with what you got.. You could go thinner and wider. but $$$$$$

Putting the duct out along the outside wall is the worst thing to do.. I iseen it done, and system did not have any air flow at all...

Every 90 degree corner adds 10 feet of run which reduces efficiency.

i.e. a 40 foot run with two 90 degree corners would equal a 60 foot run.
