I have registered and posted here because I've had various opinions on how to address some attic venting questions. Your comments please: [B]Problems:[/B] We have a new stackable dryer that I have vented into the attic and out the soffit via 4" metal pipe. Ductwork from the dryer to the attic is via the rectanglar in-wall style metal vent with built-in . In the laundry area we also had two recessed lights which I recently replaced with "sealed" style recessed lights. We also have a bathroom shower vent that exits out the soffit as well. Ventilation in the attic is currently only via gable end vents and I am noticing lots of condensation on attic nails and wood (sometimes frost). My plan is to change the vents so that they both go out the gable end of the house. I have had a professional suggest I re-insulate the attic (since the house was built in 1955 using carpenters pad) and install ridge and soffit vents. I should be well under the common 25 ft restriction for dryer venting. [B]Questions:[/B] What should I use for ductwork material on these two items? Is PVC now the preferred method for venting? Is it safe to use on a dryer? What is the safest way to insulate around the opening in the wall where the vent protrudes in to the attic? The dryer ductwork gets very warm. I have a number of different questions. The house was built in 1987 and I have been there a year. I'm contemplating a laundry room in the 2nd floor attic area adjacent to my bathroom. It has the 10" flooring,etc. but it also has the pipe to vent the furnace and water heater. Rather than running straight up and out the roof, it comes 3' into the attic space, has a 45 degree angle elbow runs about 12' up where it has another angle elbow to a 3-4' section out the roof. To put the laundry room where I want it, I need a door way basically "through" this 12' section. Is there any code reason why the piping cannot come straight up the attic wall for the 8' and then have a lesser slope out the same attic spot? It would only be about 12-16" up so I'm not sure if this is a deal breaker on my 2nd floor laundry room based upon where it is currently vented. 2nd question: One of the basement rooms has no returns and only 1 heat vent. Even if other areas in the basement are 68 degrees, this particular room is only 63 degrees. Would adding a return help, or should I put in a 2nd vent? I've tried closing the door to keep air in and tried leaving it open to circulate, no difference. 3rd question: I've read a lot of negativity towards flexible ducting, and I have that in my attic for my second floor vents. The 2nd floor gets plenty warm ... you can put on short sleeves, while you need a sweatshirt on the first floor.... But is there a benefit to changing them out? Thanks for any insight.
