Best Return Height

Is there a general guideline for what height a cold air return should be located off the floor? I have an 8' ceiling in the bedroom I'm finishing, and I am not sure what height to put the register. Thanks!

Is this for a heating-only, cooling-only or combined system?

Since hot air rises the preferred position of supply is low and returns high; for cooling it is the opposite. Combined systems are a compromise and designed towards the function most used.

In an ideal world, it is best to have two returns on the upper floors which you can open/close depending on whether you are heating or cooling.

During the cooling season, you would open the high return.
During the heating season, you would open the low return.
