Gable Vent Install????

Gable Vent Install????
I have an old attic fan installed on my roof which doesn't work anymore. It will be easier to install a gable vent fan rather than replace the attic fan since I have good access from the inside.
Can I install a gable vent fan over the existing attic fan hole (the roof line is on a 45 degree pitch)? Or does a gable fan have to be installed vertically?
Thanks.

Nobody posted so I thought I take a stab! Their should be no reason that you couldn't but Id be concerned with the CFM difference. I would think that the Gable fan would move more air and it would be starving for air with the hood for the old roof fan causing back pressure. Id just replace the motor on the old fan.
