whole House Fan - tips to quiet?

I have purchased a 24" direct drive fan from Home Depot but have now been told that this is a very noisy fan (I realize most whole house fans are noisy) and when we looked at it, it seems to operate by a pull chain.

Is there:

1) any way to make the fan quieter when we install it?

2) any way to change the on/off mechanism from a pull chain to a wall switch? Or do I need to take this back and get a another type of fan?

My house is 900 sqft and I do not have AC.

Thanks!

Both things can be accomplished to some extent but it would be better to just buy a fan that fits the requirements you have.

A direct-drive fan will almost always be noisier than a belt-driven fan. For the same air moving capacity a slow-turning belt driven fan will be larger and quieter than a direct-driven fan. A belt-driven fan will probably last much longer than a direct-drive fan.

Yes, you can install a wall switch, timer or thermostat on the fan you purchased. It will require a small bit of wiring exterenal to the fan.
