Automatic foundation vents

Just replaced a few crawlspace vents with Master Flow automatic vents from home improvement store (suppose to open automatically around 70 degrees and close around 40 degrees.) Just checked on them and one is slightly open and the other one is completely closed (the high temp here today is mid-80's.) Does anyone know why they are not opening like they are suppose to? Thanks.

Why close the vents during warm weather? I thought they are suppose to keep foundation crawl spaces ventilated and dry during the warmer months (we are in the hot humid south)? I know we're suppose to close them during cold weather during winter to help pipes from freezing etc. But why close them now? Thanks for any info.

Same story! Close vents to keep warm humidly air from entering crawl-space. 6mil vapor barrier on dirt. If walls are above grade insulate with 2in polystyrene. Dehumidifier to keep RH below 55%.

How to temporarily ventilate basement.

I'm not sure which forum to post this message...I hope this is okay. ---------------------------- I have been doing some remodeling and painting in my basement and the odors linger for weeks after. Is there a way I could improve ventilation (to move the odors out of the house)? I open the small windows but that doesn't do much. My basement doesn't have duct exhausts either. Any suggestions? Last week a stray (tom) cat got closed under our house and didn't make noise for 4 days. By that time we had a lot of cat pee! Seems that it drank water from the drip pan under the air handler and proceeded to mark every square foot under there. The smell started coming in the house, so we began pulling up plastic under there, thinking we'd just lay more and fix the problem. But we found a mucky mess under the plastic - major moisture. Lots of mold. We had a leaky shower drain that had gone unnoticed. Mixed with the cat's activities, it was really odiferous. so we have several issues. But my big question at this point is why outside air (the pee and mold smell) is coming into the house. If I pull out the filter and stick my head in a return duct when the air isn't blowing, it's like I'm sitting in the crawlspace. I don't see any ducts disconnected down there. I do see several places where the wrapping on the thick insulation has popped, and you can see the pink insulation, but I assume there is a plastic duct somewhere inside that and smell shouldn't get in. Am I correct that the air handler shouldn't be sucking outside air under there?Read More
