I need to install some new registers in my ductwork of my htg/cooling system. The duct is easy to get to as it is in the basement and is exposed. Any ideas?

If this is for heat and cool down there. you will be better off . To cut in takes off in the top of the duct and run pipe to just off the outside walls
but a boot there and a register on it.
For a register in the duct. Cut the hole 1" under the size of the register all around. Like a 10"X6"
Cut the hole 8"X4" Cut 1"at a 45o in each corner. Now bend that 1" into the duct at about a 45o. This will give you the 10"X6" hole for the register . So just screw it on
