Return air grills make howling sound
My new home has an interesting problem. The return air grills will “howl”. This was verified by temporarily removing the grills from the wall and the howling stopped. In an attempt to resolve the problem, the system fan speed was reduced. Although this helped reduce the oscillation with the larger grills, a smaller grill in one of the bedrooms is now howling. The return duct system seems properly sized because there is no objectionable sound of rushing air. I am curious if better quality, more robust, grills are available that will not oscillate.

Yes They just cost more is why you have what you have. Most of the time the grill resonates. You could cut the wall out more and put a bigger grill on that same return . Are take a long nose pliers and bend the fins on each end just a little to flaten it out some .
