range hood adaptation

I am trying to install an island range hood over my electric stove. I have a soffit that is ducted outside. The hood needs to be a minimum of 30" over the stove. That only leaves me 19" to the soffit and all the product specs indicate a minimum length of 24" and up. Can I adapt a hood to accommodate the shorter length without too much trouble (or some trouble) without compromising the venting ability of the hood? Can I just cut the flue to accommodate the shorter length? Any help here would be most appreciated since I am breaking new personal ground here. Thank you.

Is your duct single wall? If so just cut it to fit.
