Disinfecting ducts?

We just had the ducts in our new house cleaned and of course the cleaners told us that what we really needed was a total disinfecting of the ducts and a UV system to kill mold & mildew in the ducts. I thought it sounded like a scam! Is this a real maintenance need and if so can I disinfect the ducts myself somehow? Thanks!

New house or new to you. If new to you, a cleaning as you had done may be in order. Consumer Reports feels most cleanings as well as disinfecting and UV are a scam. Those who sell the service will disagree but my money will stay in my pocket on this subject.

I sell hvac cleaning all the time and if done wright is very good. Only time the system needs to be treated is when there is mold in there. UV will do nothing to kill mold in an hvac system air stream. It will kill mold on a coil if the light is on it, but a good cleaning evert year will do the same thing.
