Ducting not connected to register vent covers - older house

Hi, I just bought a 1960's house, and have noticed that the heating duct work does not connect directly to the floor vents in the house. In most cases, the duct work is stuck into a cut out in the floor with at least a 1/2 gap around all four sides and then 2 - 4 inches above is the vent cover. Should I get this fixed? Does it matter that the heat is escaping all around...to the basement? Thanks

Yes fix it. No air should be escaping between floors.

I am curious. Are there any vent boots? What is holding the ductwork to the wood? Like Airman said, it needs to be fixed properly. Looks like that job went to the lowest bidder.
