Advise on furnace register under kitchen cabinets?

Advise on furnace register under kitchen cabinets?
I'm adding a few more cabinets in my kitchen and have a furnace register that will be under one. I would like for it to exit in the toe kick of the cabinet. Do I need to add an elbow and ducting or can I simply just put a register in the to kick?

In my own kitchen .... I put an elbow on and a short piece of duct.
It never occurred to me to just put a register over the toe kick.
