duct size/flow

Had a question on duct work size coming out of complete heat pump systems .
Mine has the round 2 coming out of system then about a foot and a half long ,then when it enters under home it changes over to the square style thru the rest of straight run, then the small round ones branch off to go to rooms.

If the squared duct work is 15" by15" outside measurement does that mean the duct work coming out of unit-(round foot and a half -two ft long ) has to be same on size for air flow.

I couldnt get to the round ones to measure them.

15x15 supply duct sized correctly would be for 1350 cfm. two 13 inch hard duct would do it. 13 inch is not common so id used 14.

Banging/Hammering noises in walls when Furnace is on Auto?

Bear with me because I know nothing about heating/furnaces. We recently moved into a new house two weeks ago (raised bungalow, 10 years old). We noticed a banging sound that would occur throughout the walls. There are 6-7 spots that are particularly loud/bad, especially in the basement bedroom, where you constantly hear banging/hammering type noise. The next day we tried setting the furnace to ON instead of AUTO. The noise pretty much stopped. Now there is much softer banging/hammering type sounds that happen in 2 spots when the furnace turns on, and fades after 5 minutes. It is annoying but easy to tune out and not at all constant/loud like it is when the furnace is on AUTO. Having the fan ON has been great for the last 2 weeks. But my parents have decided to turn the fan to auto again because they are concerned about the cost of keeping the furnace fan on all of the time. The banging is back, constant, neverending, throughout the entire house 24/7. I was wondering if this is just how forced air furnaces are or is there a problem here? Loud banging/hammering noises coming from the walls (I guess the ducts in the walls?) at all times which mysteriously gets 90% better when it's on ON instead of AUTO..? Does it really cost a significant amount more to leave the fan on? I've read so many conflicting things, that it's bad to leave the fan on, that it's better to leave the fan on, etc. Is there a way to have the furnace on AUTO without constant banging noises coming from all sides? My last house was electric heat so I'm sorry I have no more information/knowledge about furnaces.Read More

Ductwork for microwave/hood combination

Hi, I'm about to replace a hood with an OTR microwave. I'll need to raise the cabinet above the hood (about 4"), so that there is sufficient clearance beneath the microwave (and above the range below). I'm thinking that the vent opening on the wall will need to be moved "up" the wall by 4 inches, too, so that it aligns with the exhaust at the back of the new microwave. Will I need to make a new section of ductwork (for the 4" extension), or do we think there might be a kit for just this purpose? Any advice or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!Read More
