Ventilating new structure the right way
Hi all, I am building a new jam/music room in the back yard that is 12' x 20'. It will be where a band can practice and will have music equipment and computers inside. The structure is nearly done and I constructed the soffits and put in soffit vents which this is on the outside right under the roof overhang. Then I put in some rafter vents that go from the soffits to the top of the roof. Only then, not planning venting in advance, I got to wondering where to go next. Do I make holes to have gable vents in each end? Can't do the ridge vent now that I have the roof all done. Question, does the building have to be vented at all? I will be placing an A/C window unit in the wall, not a window. If I make the gable vents will that let sounds out of the building? Just not sure at this point what to do next....please give helpful tips.
Thank you,
Carl

Is this regular 2x4 construction with sheetrocked walls ?
Is the ceiling sheetrocked ?
The ceiling should be sheetrocked with insulation above to keep the heat in the attic and the sound below. I wouldn't think putting in gable vents or a gable fan will increase noise leakage.

Hi PJmax and yes it it. Sheetrocked and insulated walls and working on the ceiling now. So are you saying I should add gable vents? I know the rafter vents from the soffit vents have nowhere to actually vent to.
Thank you

I don't have a full picture, but it sounds like you need a small ceiling/attic where all of the rafter bays will vent into a common space. Then either gable vents or a ridge vent. However, it is insulation that will reduce the heat load as venting, at best, would be minimal.
A ridge vent is still an option as it would only require replacing the area where the vent goes at the top. But a small attic to provide a path from all rafters to new gable vents will work.
As for sound reduction, I would use Roxul insulation and lots of it. Not sure how codes view this additional building, but code insulation levels are probably above what you are planning, so your ac will be working overtime.
Just curious, although I have never worked with live music, I have worked with amplifiers and the size of that space will make loud music difficult.
