Moving air return register... but to where?

I need to move the air return to a different spot (long story). I've attached a picture showing where the return is now (black arrow) and two spots I've considered moving it. (red arrow, blue arrow). I wasn't sure if a return can go on the slanted ceiling above stairs?

Air ducts in the ceiling have to run in the direction of the ceiling joists as they are installed in the space between 2 joists. In your case the joists run in the direction of the stairs. There is no way you can connect that present ceiling air duct( black arrow in you picture) to either of the areas indicated by the blue and red arrows. Unless you have a cavity from the basement( or wherever your heat source is located) to the attic to run a return air duct from either of your intended locations. a major ceiling and wall removal and repair would be involved. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply! The access is not an issue; I can get to all of the areas where the arrows are pointing. Actually that area is a big open attic-like area on the same level of the bedrooms. I would simply remove the current return and walk it 5 paces over to the blue or red arrows.

So on the slanted ceiling would be slightly less noticeable but wasn't sure if that is practical for an air return?

I don't see any problem putting the return on the slanted ceiling.

Thanks Skaggs...

I'm curious too if the air return (seen at the top of the stairs) would be too close to the 'downstairs' return if I move it onto the slanted ceiling?
