What is causing this, is it water? Is it heat? I cleaned out my ducting system with one of the flexible cleaning brushes and was able to clear out a lot of lint. Hopefully this helps out. Also how much would this cost to repair, any advice would be helpful thank you.

Was there a lot of lint at that joint? Looks like it could have been an air leak and the hot moist air caused the paint to blister. Probably needs to be sanded, some drywall repair and repainted. Easy touch up work!

I was able to pull out about two fist sized clumps but i think they were towards the middle and top of the exhaust.

I doubt heat would have done that but moisture would. It didn't happen overnight. IMO routinely inspecting the vent and cleaning it out when/if needed should be part of your household maintenance.

btw - welcome to the forums!

Lucky you didn't need a dryer repair. Clogged vent is the most common reason for dryer failure. Damp air leaking around vent caused problem.

Hi yaris,
Are you located in cold country and does that duct run through a cold space? If the duct gets very cold and especially if the air flow is limited there could have been condensation.
