Attic smell coming in house vents

Stumped
2yrold a/c unit- have been having attic smells so they replaced the intake which had major holes , and they put in Flex ,
At first seemed to solve problem, within next day - back to smelling attic smells again! What else could this come from??
Any suggestions appreciated
Thanks

Hi Jimmy and welcome to the forum.
Summer stack effect involves that expensive cool air (its heavier) seeping out the lower leaks of the house and the necessary equivalent amount seeping in the upper leaks. Some of those can be the hvac ducts while others are all over the place, electrical, plumbing, drop ceilings over cabinets, and recessed lights to name a few. I'll add a link on air sealing although it primarily describes winter stack effect, summer just works in reverse.

Solving air flow issues in a house requires that we understand what you have for a house.

Slab foundation or basement/crawlspace?
Ranch, 2-story, cape, or other?
Your climate region?
Describe "attic smells". Hot plastic, dead mouse, musty/dusty, sewer gas, give it your best shot.
What else is up there, fans, ac equipment, stored items?
Are there any recessed lights in that ceiling/attic floor?
Pull down stairs, hatch, and how well sealed?

Also, what do you have for attic ventilation, ridge vent, soffit vents, gable vents, other?

If the attic air is not being vented to the outside that would be a good place to start.

And how about all of the other questions??????

Answer to other questions

This is a duplex i live in- and walls are brick
the a/c unit is upon rooftop and the ducting is within attic itself not storage items up in attic, etc. No fans
But this is nothing to do with the issue of smells of attic through vents in home-
Im a retired plummer and been in plenty of attics in my life and know the smell of attic./ dusty dirt smell you may want to call it that....

Jimmy, you have to put yourself in our shoes as we don't know anything about you or your house until you tell us. Just mentioning that you are a retired plumber changes how we are thinking on this end and i know you understand.

From here I would be air sealing the attic floor per the guidelines within that link I provided. The normal air movement during the summer is cold air escapes the lower levels of the house creating a negative house pressure that draws the attic air in wherever it can find a path. Plumbing, electrical and heating have cut many holes along with drywall against framing which never seals perfectly.

Attic smells continued

Bud - Thankyou for all your input - very much appreciated!
before they replaced the intake on this a/ c-unit because of the attic smell - these guys gave me every excuse other than leaks in the intake i- I decided to go up into attic myself and took a piece of incense and lite it & had my wife stay downstairs & let me know when / if she smelled it - which she did smell it- therefore i knew there were leakI.so i had them replace the intale & sure enough they did see major leaks
after all said & done
The next day we found leak in new intake & called them back & they came back & found it & sealed it
But again still smelling attic . so what next
exhausting
Thanks for listening
Long story.....i know

Few hvac companies are up to date on the best methods for air sealing, they do what they have always done. Here is a link that covers a lot of the "how-to" on sealing ducts and why.
