Sealing around registers

I'm trying to seal the gaps around hvac ducts where the go through the floor to hook up to the registers. I tried sealing from below in the basement using expanding spray foam from a can. Turns out since I was spraying up all the foam did was fall down. Any ideas?

How large are the gaps? It might be easier to bend and fit right angle pieces of flashing to cover wider gaps and then use caulking to finish.

Can foam can have a short life where caulking and flashing will last almost forever.

You can use foil tape to seal the duct perimeter to the subfloor.
