Locating duct dampers in basement ceiling?

Half my basement has a finished drywall ceiling that was installed before I had central AC. The adjustable dampers that were fine for heating balance don't seem right for cooling and it gets too hot upstairs. I'm willing to bore access holes in the ceiling IF I can determine where to drill.

Is there a method or trick in finding the covered damper shafts?

They are typ installed right off the supply trunk but that could be on top, the sides, or the ends.

If any portion is visable at least that would be a clue to the approx location!

I recall seeing them years ago before the ceiling went up, pointed down, but don't recall if they were 6 inches or 6 feet from the trunk.

You could pick up one of those inspection cameras with a probe.
Make a few small holes and have a peek. harbor freight/digital-inspection-camera

OK so this isn't a common problem for which there's a "tried n true" solution. I was hoping.

I'll McGyver up some way to find the locations.

I wonder if a stud finder would locate the damper shafts since they're thicker and closer to the drywall than the thin sheetmetal duct...?

I've seen ads for a gimmicky-looking cellphone app that claims to be able to "see" pipes, studs, wire, etc inside walls. Never paid much attention since it didn't seem plausible.
