Wrong Size Filter?

I had a brand new furnace installed and a few months afterwards, I decided to checkout the condition of the filter and I noticed that the installer had writing 16x20x1 on the filter compartment cover. Upon opening said cover, I also noticed that the filter had fallen out of its housing into the bottom of the furnace. It seems to be the wrong size be because after pulling it back up and placing it in the slot in which it should go, it fell down inside the furnace yet again.
I’m not furnace expert but it seems as if 17x20x1 would actually fit my furnace properly. I’ve included a few pictures to give you an idea of what I’m talking about.
Your input would be appreciated.

Sure looks like you need a bigger filter!

So what is the question?

That’s what I suspected.
I’m going to order some 17x20x1 filters.
Thank you!

Measure the opening. 17 inch may not be large enough. You should also measure front-to-back too. Or check the manual for the correct size.

While it looks like the bigger size is warranted, it's best to measure first to make sure.

I have a feeling a metal guide strip was left out that would accept he 16 x20 (which by the way is a standard size, and 17 x20 is not). Call the installers or he furnace maker and ask what size filter is needed for that model.
